The MAC’s Judicial Committee
Partnering to Promote Efficient, Ethical, and Effective Justice
As Colorado’s leading network of professional mediators, the Mediation Association of Colorado (MAC) is uniquely positioned to support judges, courts, and judicial staff in integrating Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practices into the legal system. Through our Judicial Liaison Committee, MAC provides a structured and collaborative platform where judges and mediators can work together to create meaningful, effective solutions to reduce court congestion and deliver justice more efficiently.
A Bridge Between Courts and Colorado’s Professional Mediators
The Judicial Liaison Committee exists to foster and maintain strong, mutually beneficial relationships between the judiciary and professional mediators across the state. Through regular committee meetings, joint programming, and open communication, we build trust, promote innovation, and ensure that mediation continues to evolve as a respected and effective tool within the legal system.
Benefits for Judges Who Engage with MAC
- Direct Access to Professional Mediators: Our network allows judicial officers to quickly match cases with qualified, experienced mediators—many of whom have specialized expertise in areas such as family law, civil litigation, and restorative justice.
- Education and Training: MAC offers presentations and ongoing education to help judges, magistrates, and court staff deepen their understanding of mediation and how it can be strategically applied within the judicial process.
- Court Support and Volunteer Mediators: We coordinate volunteer opportunities that place trained mediators in high-need court programs, reducing caseloads and providing new mediators with critical experience.
- Monthly Judicial Committee Meetings: These collaborative sessions offer a space for open dialogue, case study sharing, and collective problem-solving between judges, mediators, and judicial-affiliated professionals.
- Custom Program Development: We assist courts in designing and implementing mediation initiatives that are sustainable, ethically sound, and tailored to each jurisdiction’s unique needs.
Overcoming Barriers to Mediation in the Legal System
While many courts issue occasional Orders to Mediate, fully integrating mediation requires a deeper commitment. Effective mediation programs need to include:
- Consistent processes embedded in case management workflows
- Public education to improve understanding and engagement
- Active involvement from court staff and judicial leadership
MAC stands ready to support courts with program development, staff training, and community engagement—but sustainable success depends on judicial buy-in.
Promoting Ethical Standards and Best Practices
While the Judicial Liaison Committee does not oversee ethics, every discussion surrounding mediation in the courtroom addresses critical issues such as:
- Confidentiality
- Impartiality
- Integrity
- Fairness in the administration of justice
Judges who engage with MAC are helping to set and maintain the highest standards for court-referred mediation across Colorado.
Join the Conversation—And Lead the Change
Colorado judges are invited to join MAC’s Judicial Liaison Committee to shape the future of ADR in our state. By participating in monthly meetings, collaborating with mediation professionals, and contributing to the evolution of dispute resolution practices, you’ll be part of a statewide effort to modernize and improve access to justice.
