Sara Johnson is the past president of the Mediation Association of Colorado, actively involved in Mediators Beyond Borders and contracted as a mediator with the Office of Dispute Resolution of the Colorado Judicial Branch. Having mediated over 1200 cases, Sara specializes in domestic relations issues including divorce, parenting plans, child support, dependency and neglect in addition to mediating civil disputes. Sara is one of few mediators authorized by the Office of Dispute Resolution to mediate cases in both Spanish and English in Colorado.
After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College with a concentration in cultural anthropology, Sara spent twenty years living and working in Spain and South America and brings a wide range of experience and worldviews to her practice. She is a published author of multicultural literature for children as well as a feature length screenplay set in Argentina during World War I. She has worked in the production of film and video including producing a documentary on landmines in Mozambique.
Sara loves her work. She sees as the mediation process as helping people create a new future for themselves and their families. Change is difficult and conflict is inevitable, but there are solutions to closing one chapter in life and beginning again through honest dialogue, creativity and problem solving.
While attorneys are not required for mediation, mediators cannot offer legal advice, therefore Sara strongly recommends that parties count on their legal counsel when making major decisions, whether that be during mediation, or between sessions as advisors. Her experience is that collaborative attorneys are a great asset to the mediation process and help parties understand their options and feel comfortable with their choices.
Making important decisions when dissolving a marriage and creating a plan for the future of your family takes time and concentration. Sara has opened her new office in Southeast Denver with the intention of creating a comfortable and friendly environment, outside of the courthouse, for parties and attorneys to work together towards creating the best solutions through mediation.
Therefore in addition to the option of mediating through the Office of Dispute Resolution, Sara now offers half and full day private mediations at her office in Southeast Denver.
